ARLINGTON, Texas – The UTSA softball team finished third at the Boerner Invitational after defeating UT Arlington, 8-7 on Sunday.
The Mavs (7-7) scored right off the bat with a run in the top of the first. In the bottom of the frame, UTSA (11-5) scored four runs to take the lead. Celeste Loughman had a lead-off single, followed by singles from Kindell Brooks and Taylor Medina to load the bases. Victoria Villarreal earned a walk as Loughman scored. Marena Estell singled and Lauren Coerver was hit by a pitch as Brooks and Medina reached home to lead 3-1. Closing out the inning, Hannah Boring hit a sac fly to score Villarreal. The Roadrunners led 4-1 after the first.
In the third, UTA had a two-run homer to close the gap to one, 4-3, until UTSA scored four more runs to extend the lead. Back-to-back solo homers from Medina and Villarreal pushed the lead to three, 6-3. Coerver singled to right field and Hannah Boring earned a walks as runners advanced. With two outs, Loughman singled to right field to advance runners to scoring position. Coerver and Boring scored from a double down the left line by Brooks to lead 8-3.
UTA scored a run off a sac fly in the fifth to trail 4-8.
In the top of the seventh, a three-run homer brought the Mavs within one (8-7). A flyout, line out and a popup ended the inning and helped the Roadrunners take the game.
UTSA recorded 11 hits on the game. Marena Estell picked up the win, pitching 4.0 innings, while Makenzie Carpenter garnered the save.
The Roadrunners return to action Feb. 28-29 for the Jacksonville State Invite.
