Roadrunners split games with Rutgers on Saturday

ARLINGTON, Texas – The UTSA softball team went 1-1 with Rutgers on Saturday. The Roadrunners won the first game, 2-1, while the Scarlet Knights took the second game, 2-0.
 
Game one
Through the first two innings, Rutgers recorded two hits and left three on, while UTSA had one hit and left two on.
 
In the third inning, the Scarlet Knights added a run from a triple and a wild pitch to lead 1-0.
 
The Roadrunners came back in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. With one out, Celeste Loughman hit a solo home run to right center, tying the game. Kindell Brooks followed with a double and Riley Grunberg singled as runners advanced. Victoria Villarreal singled as Brooks scored and UTSA took the lead and garnered the game.
 
Madison Nelson picked up the win improving to 2-0 on the season, while pitching all seven innings with three strikeouts.
 
UTSA had six hits on the game, while the Scarlet Knights only had four.
 
Game two
A two-run homer in the sixth helped Rutgers take game two.
 
In the first inning, Celeste Loughman doubled, Riley Grunberg reached on a fielder's choice and Victoria Villarreal earned a walk, but they couldn't make it home.
 
Through five innings, the Scarlet Knights had three hits and left six on. UTSA recorded three hits while leaving seven on.
 
In the top of the sixth, Rutgers was on the board from a walk and a two-run homer to lead 2-0.
 
Both teams left one on in the seventh to end the game.
 
Erika Cortez falls to 2-3 on the season, pitching 2.1 innings with three strikeouts after replacing Makenzie Carpenter in the fifth.
 
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow for the consolation game at 10 a.m. UTSA will play the loser of the UT Arlington/Kansas game.
