HUMBLE, Texas — Keyed by a 1-under-par round from Chad Sewell, the UTSA men's golf team moved into a tie for third place on the second day of the All-American Intercollegiate on Monday at the Golf Club of Houston's Tournament Course (par 72/7,067 yards).
Sewell's 71 helped the Roadrunners turn in a 292 and move from fourth into a tie with Rice for third at 3-under 573 with 18 holes left to play on Wednesday. UTSA is five shots behind No. 8 Wake Forest (568) and nine shy of 36-hole leader Sam Houston State (564). The Roadrunners are three strokes ahead of ULM (576) and four in front of Louisiana (577) in the 13-team field.
Playing near his hometown of Conroe, Sewell birdied four of the nine holes on the front side, including back-to-back on Nos. 5-6, en route to a 4-under 32. The junior's 71 helped him leap six spots into a tie for sixth in the individual race at 3-under 141.
Christian Fanfelle also is part of a three-way tie for sixth at 3-under par. The sophomore from San Antonio opened with a collegiate career-best 67 on Sunday before posting a 74 on Monday that included a trio of birdies.
Sewell and Fanfelle are seven shots off the pace of 10-under 134 (68-66) set by Sam Houston State's Luis Carrera.
Meanwhile, Adam House is also on the top 10 after recording an even-par round on the strength of a pair of birdies on Monday. The senior from Rockwall is sitting at 2-under 142 with one round remaining.
Hunter Bott and Collin Clark round out the UTSA lineup in 45th (74-75—149) and 58th (75-76—151), respectively.
Competing as an individual, Will Adams is in 79th (79-83—162).
The final round is slated for Tuesday and the Roadrunners will tee off of No. 1 beginning at 8 a.m.
