SAN ANTONIO – Shane Daughety and Hunter Mason shut down Quinnipiac in UTSA's 5-1 victory Saturday at Roadrunner Field.
Daughety worked the first 7.1 innings, allowing one run before giving the ball to Mason, who sat down all five guys he faced.
The Bobcats struck first when Evan Vulgamore led off the second with a home run. It was the first run the Roadrunners (2-0) pitching staff had surrendered through the first 11-inninngs of the season.
In the third, Jonathan Tapia reached by being hit by a pitch and came around to score on an RBI double from Bryan Sturges. Thornquist followed with a single, chasing Sturges home and gave the home team a 2-1 advantage. Taylor Barber tacked on to the advantage with a two-out RBI single, plating Hunter Grimes.
Thornquist added his second RBI of the day in the fifth with a base knock through the left side of the Bobcats infield, scoring Dylan Rock from second.
Freshman Hobbs Price registered the first hit, home run, run and RBI of his career when he blasted a towering shot over the left-center fence to open the bottom of the eighth.
