SAN ANTONIO – Single tallies in the first and eighth innings propelled UTSA to a 2-0 victory over Quinnipiac Friday at Roadrunner Field.
Slater Foust, Cole McKay and Palmer Wenzel combined for a one-hit shutout in the season opener for both teams at Roadrunner Field.
Dylan Rock accounted for both runs, which proved to be more than enough for UTSA. In the first, he singled and stole second before coming around to score on a two-out RBI single by Griffin Paxton.
After allowing a double and a base-on-balls to the Bobcats first two hitters, Foust worked out of the jam and left the game with a 1-0 lead with one on and two out in the seventh.
McKay replaced Foust and closed the frame with a strikeout. He fanned two more in the eighth and handed the ball over to Wenzel for the final three outs.
Rock led off with a hustle double in the bottom of the frame and added an insurance run when he scored on a fielder's choice by Nick Thornquist.
Wenzel, who made just three appearances before a season-ending injury last season, retired Quinnipiac in order and earned the save.
The middle game of the three-game series is at 2 p.m. Saturday.
