SAN ANTONIO -- A 32-time medalist at the junior level, Estonian talent Marilis Remmel has signed a National Letter of Intent with UTSA, it was announced by Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox on Monday.
"I am extremely excited to announce that we have signed Marilis Remmel to UTSA," Fox said. "She is one of Estonia's top junior track & field talents in the heptathlon and triple jump but also is one of the world's top junior javelin throwers. We look forward to the contributions she will make to our program."
Remmel, a native of Kuressaare, Estonia, comes to the Roadrunners for the 2020-21 season with a total of 32 medals as a decorated performer in the U-16, U-18 and U-20 Estonian Championships. Remmel has 14 gold, 10 silver and eight bronze medals over competitions at the under-16, under-18 and under-20 level.
Remmel owns a pair of U-16 wins in the heptathlon, triple jump and the 100-meter hurdles, also placing second at the U-16 level in the 60m hurdles, pentathlon and 200m hurdles in the Estonian Championships. She won U-18 titles in the triple jump twice, and also in the heptathlon and 60m hurdles, with second-place finishes in the javelin, long jump and 60m hurdles in the Estonian Championships.
In U-20 competition, Remmel has victories in the triple jump, second in the heptathlon and pentathlon, and at the European Championship level shined in the javelin. She posted a javelin personal best of 54.58 meters (178 feet, 9 inches) with a 500-gram implement, good to rank No. 12 in the world. At the 2018 U-18 European Championships in Gyor, Hungary, Remmel placed fifth.
She owns personal bests of 12.42m (40 feet, 9 inches) in the triple jump and 8.78 seconds in the 60m hurdles. In the heptathlon, Remmel owns a personal best of 5,363 at the U-18 level.
