SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's basketball team dropped a 53-80 decision to Florida Atlantic in the conference opener Thursday night.
UTSA falls to 4-8 overall and 0-1 in C-USA play, while the Owls improve to 7-5, 1-0 C-USA.
The Roadrunners opened the game with a scoring drought until Makayla Woods put the first points on the board at the 6:00 mark. UTSA forced four turnovers in a span of 2:33 to keep the Owls from scoring. FAU then hit a 6-0 run until Adryana Quezada made a jump shot at 3:28 to break the streak. The Owls went on a 13-2 run over 4:14 of the quarter as the Roadrunners trailed 7-17 after the first.
Charlene Mass opened with second quarter with a jump shot at 8:39 as the Roadrunners trailed 9-20. The Roadrunners continued to score in the second, while recording two steals and forcing four turnovers, but the Owls put up 27 points to lead 44-26 at the half.
Coming out of the locker room, UTSA struggled to score until Mass scored at 6:55. Karrington Donald hit a 3-pointer at 5:13 as UTSA trailed 31-52. The Owls hit a scoring drought for over three minutes as the Roadrunners went on a 7-0 run to close the gap. FAU led 56-35 going to the final 10 minutes.
The fourth quarter was close as UTSA scored 18 points and the Owls, 24. The Roadrunners hit a scoring drought early in the quarter until Quezada made a jump shot at 5:43. Florida Atlantic went on a 6-0 run until Woods broke it at 4:11. The remainder of the game stayed close as both teams found the basket, but UTSA wouldn't catch up as the Owls took the win.
