After a tough battle, Roadrunners fall short to Owls

SAN ANTONIO – After a hard fought battle, the UTSA women's basketball team fell short to Rice, 62-74 Saturday afternoon.
 
The Roadrunners fall to 6-12, 2-5 C-USA, while the Owls improve to 13-6, 8-0 in conference.
 
Rice opened the game with a layup and drew a foul to lead 3-0. Karrington Donald put the first points on the board for UTSA at the 8:13 mark. With 6:15 on the clock, Evelyn Omemmah made a jump shot to take UTSA's first lead of the game, 6-5. The Owls took back the lead until Mikayla Woods made back-to-back shots and drew a foul as the Roadrunners led 11-7 with 2:26 remaining. In the final minute of the game, Rice went on a 6-0 run to take the lead, 13-11, at the end of the first.
 
In the second quarter, Omemmah tied the game at 13, 14 seconds in. By the 5:48 mark, UTSA had forced three turnovers for Rice. UTSA hit a scoring drought until Charlene Mass made a jump shot and drew a foul to lead 16-13. Back-to-back shots pushed UTSA's lead to five, 20-15, and the Roadrunners held onto the lead until Rice regained it with 2:45 remaining. The game was tied at 24 with 2:20 left on the clock, but the Owls went 6-0 in the final minutes to lead 30-24 at the half.
 
Coming out of the locker room, Rice went on a 10-5 run through the first five minutes to push the lead 43-31. UTSA hit a scoring drought until Woods made a layup at 3:12 to close the gap to 10 (35-45). In the final 2:30 minutes, the Owls went on a 9-5 run to lead 56-40 at the end of the third.
 
The Roadrunners continued to fight in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Owls 22-18. Within the first three minutes, UTSA hit a 6-0 run to bridge the gap to 12 (46-58). In the remaining seven minutes, both teams continued to find the basket until the final buzzer.
