Roadrunners fall short in comeback to Lady Eagles

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The UTSA women's basketball team fell short in a second quarter comeback and dropped a 69-82 decision to Southern Miss on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Roadrunners fall to 6-9 overall and 2-2 in conference action.
 
UTSA got off to a slow start, allowing the Lady Eagles to score 18 points before Adryana Quezada put up the first points with 5:23 remaining. UTSA went on a 7-0 run to trail 7-18. Southern Miss made a 3-pointer, but the Roadrunners went on another run (6-0) to trail by eight (13-21). USM led 23-17 after the first.
 
Quezada opened the second quarter with a shot 31 seconds in to trail by nine, 19-28. Karrington Donald made back-to-back 3-pointers to trail 25-34 with 7:05 to go. For about four minutes, USM went on an 8-4 run to push the lead. Donald made another Roadrunner three at the 3:11 mark to trail by 10, 32-42. The Roadrunners hit another 6-0 run to close the gap to four (40-44). Southern Miss made a layup and drew a foul seconds as UTSA trailed 41-47 at the half.
 
In the third, UTSA went on a 6-0 run to trail by one, 47-48. Southern Miss made a jump shot to make it 50-47, but Mikayla Woods made a layup and drew a foul to tie the game at 50 with 6:33 remaining. Quezada made a free throw to take the first lead of the game. The Lady Eagles made a 3-pointer to regain the lead, but Donald rallied back with a 3-pointer of her own to take back the lead, 54-53. USM went on a 7-0 run for a little over three minutes to take the lead once again. The Roadrunners trailed 55-60 going into the final 10 minutes.
 
Opening the fourth, Southern Miss went on a 12-2 run for 5:36 to push the lead. In the final minute, Deja Cousin hit back-to-back 3-pointers, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Eagles scored 22 points in the quarter to take the win.
