DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Former UTSA safety Carl Austin III will represent the Roadrunners in the SPIRAL Tropical Bowl All-Star Game on Sunday, Jan. 12. Kickoff is set for 9 a.m. CT at Daytona Stadium.
The game will air live on FloFootball.com (subscription required) via tropicalbowl.com/tv.
Austin will suit up for the American Team, which will be coached by Todd Littlejohn, and he will become the third Roadrunner to play in the Tropical Bowl, joining Nate Gaines (2018) and Kevin Strong Jr. (2019).
Austin posted 134 total tackles, 87 solo stops, 13.5 tackles for loss, four pass breakups, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 47 career games (20 starts) for the Roadrunners. A product of Austin St. Stephen's High School, he ranked second on the team with 65 total tackles and 46 unassisted tackles as a senior. He also tallied 7.5 tackles for loss, one PBU and a forced fumble in 2019.
In his final campaign, Austin logged a season-high nine stops in the win at UTEP and added seven tackles against both UAB and Southern Miss. His career high of 10 tackles came versus UAB in 2017, when he was a key member of a defense that led Conference USA in seven statistical categories and ranked in the top five nationally in five.
Austin was a member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and he earned his bachelor's degree in sport, event & tourism management in 2018.
