UTSA announces trio of future home football games

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA announced Thursday future home football games against Grambling State in 2020, Texas Southern in 2022 and Houston Baptist in 2024 at the Alamodome.

The Roadrunners will face Grambling State for the first time on Sept. 19, 2020, at the Alamodome. The World Famed GSU Tiger Marching Band, which has performed at several Super Bowls and numerous other large events, is scheduled to make the trip to San Antonio for the game. UTSA now has a pair of home contests scheduled for 2020, as the Roadrunners will play Memphis on Sept. 26.

UTSA will host Texas Southern on Sept. 24, 2022, and that now gives the Roadrunners two home games that season, as Houston will travel to the Alamodome for the season opener on Sept. 3, along with a road contest on Sept. 17 at Texas.

The Roadrunners will welcome Houston Baptist to San Antonio on Sept. 21, 2024. The inaugural meeting with the Huskies also completes the non-conference home slate for that year, as the Roadrunners will host Houston in the lid-lifter on Aug. 31, 2024. In fact, all four non-conference contests for 2024 will be against in-state teams, as UTSA will play at Texas State on Sept. 7 and at Texas the following Saturday.

"With the growth of our football program from its infancy combined with the move into a competitive league like Conference USA, UTSA has reevaluated its overall scheduling philosophy for future non-conference games." UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos said. "Non-conference scheduling strategies across all levels of Division I football have changed over the years. Our goal when scheduling non-conference games is to put together a balanced and competitive schedule that best positions our program. Texas is a recruiting hotbed, so we will focus on in-state and regional matchups that give our fans more opportunities to see us play and at the same time place an emphasis on our recruiting efforts."

An emphasis has been placed on securing home-and-home series with teams from the other four Group of Five conferences, the American Athletic, Mid-American, Mountain West and Sun Belt. UTSA also will continue to schedule games against teams from the Power Five leagues:  the Atlantic Coast, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and Southeastern Conferences.

The Roadrunners will open their ninth season of play and fourth under head coach Frank Wilson on Aug. 31 when they host UIW at the Alamodome. Other 2019 home games include Army West Point (Sept. 14), UAB (Oct. 12), Rice (Oct. 19), Southern Miss (Nov. 16) and Florida Atlantic (Nov. 23).
