Softball shuts out Lamar in five innings

BEAUMONT - Madison Nelson allowed just two hits in a 9-0 shutout over Lamar Sunday afternoon. 
 
Nelson picked up her fifth win of the season after pitching just five innings as the game ended in a run-rule. 
 
The Roadrunners started the game with two hits in the first, but left two on base.  UTSA allowed just one hit from the Cardinals as they left one on.
 
Celeste Loughman put UTSA on the board with a single and an advance off an error, scoring Victoria Villarreal.
 
Paige Pacher opened the top of the fourth with a single down the left field line. Celeste Loughman followed with a single to third, while Bailee Baldwin tacked on another hit for UTSA with a bunt single to advance runners. Riley Grunberg reach first on a fielder's choice as Pacher was thrown out at home. A single from Kindell Brooks added the first run of the inning as Loughman scored. The second run came from a single by Kaitlin Lopez as Baldwin reached home. In the bottom of the frame, the Roadrunners allowed just one hit from the Cardinals.
 
In the fifth, Brycen Blinco hit a double to center right then stole third to reach scoring position. Loughan hit a sacrifice fly to right field as Blinco scored. Baldwin scored one for the Roadrunners hitting a triple, followed by a single from Grunberg. A single from Brooks and a double from Lopez added two more runs for UTSA as it led 8-0. Elexus Trenkle closed out the game with a double to center field to score Lopez. 
 
The Roadrunners went 5-0 on the weekend with three shutouts. UTSA hasn't swept a tournament since the 2005 season.
 
UTSA returns to action Feb. 28-March 2 for the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif. The first game for the Roadrunners is on Friday when they face Tennessee at 2:30 p.m. CT.
