SAN ANTONIO – Freshman Mikayla Woods recorded a career-high 32 points and 11 rebounds as the Roadrunners dropped a 77-81 decision to Sam Houston State on Sunday afternoon.
The Roadrunners (3-6) shot 44.4 percent from the field, while the Bearkats (4-3) shot 40 percent.
Sam Houston State scored first and took an early lead in the first quarter. At the first media timeout (4:43), the Bearkats had a 12-6 lead. SHSU went on a 6-0 run to gain an 11-point lead with two minutes remaining. UTSA scored six points in the final couple of minutes, but it wasn't enough as the Bearkats led 28-16 at the end of the first.
The Roadrunners opened the second quarter with a 6-0 run to bridge the gap to 10 points (20-30). Adryana Quezada brought UTSA within eight (31-39) with a layup at the 3:06 mark, which led to a scoring drought for the Bearkats. Quezada led the team with seven points in the quarter as UTSA trailed 35-45 going to the locker room.
Karley Larson made a 3-pointer within the first 30 seconds of the third quarter to start a 7-0 run for UTSA. The Bearkats scored 15 seconds into the quarter and didn't score again until the 6:35 mark with a free throw.. UTSA fought to find the basket and came within three points (46-49) after a layup from Larson with 5:18 to go. The Roadrunners hit multiple scoring runs throughout the quarter to close in on SHSU. With 1:04 left on the clock, Quezada made a layup and earned a free throw off a foul to take the lead (59-57).The Bearkats took back the lead with five seconds left on the clock with a layup and a free throw.
SHSU opened the final 10 minutes with an 8-2 scoring run to push the lead to eight (61-69). UTSA came back with a 6-0 to be within three, but the Bearkats continued to find the basket and take the victory.
The Roadrunners return to action on Dec. 20 when they host Texas Wesleyan at 2 p.m.
