SAN ANTONIO – Freshman Adryana Quezada scored 32 points as the Roadrunners defeated Texas Wesleyan 80-78 in an afternoon thriller on Friday.
UTSA improves to 4-6 on the season.
The first quarter was slow as the Roadrunners scored just 10 points and the Rams six. UTSA opened the game with a 5-0 run and kept Texas Wesleyan from scoring until the 7:05 mark. The Roadrunners hit a scoring drought until it was broken from a layup by Charlene Mass. Shannan Mitchell made her Roadrunner debut and put a point on the board from a free throw as the Roadrunners led 10-4 with 1:14 remaining. UTSA led 10-6 going to the second.
The Roadrunners stepped it up in the second quarter, scoring 22 points. UTSA went on an 8-4 run to open the quarter and lead 18-10. The Rams followed with a 6-0 run to close the gap to two (18-16). The Roadrunners had a 6-0 run off two 3-pointers and Adryana Quezada put up 12 points in the quarter to help UTSA lead 32-25 at the half.
Out of the locker room, Texas Wesleyan went on a 7-0 run and tied the game at 32. A free throw from the Rams put them in the lead, but Adryana Quezada broke a UTSA scoring drought and put the Roadrunners back in the lead. UTSA hit a 9-0 run to lead 41-33 with 5:32 remaining. Texas Wesleyan followed with a 3-pointer to break the streak and then hit a 3-pointer at 3:49 to tie the game at 44, but Donald made a layup to take back the lead.
The last 10 minutes of the game was a battle on both sides of the court as both teams scored 25 points each. At the 8:08 mark, the Rams took the lead, but the Roadrunners bounced back to regain their lead. Texas Wesleyan tied the game at 74 with 1:29 remaining. The Rams then took the lead again with just over a minute to go until Donald hit a 3-pointer to lead 77-76. It came down to the final seconds of the game as the Roadrunners took the victory.
