Jackson’s double-double pushes UTSA to rout of UT Permian Basin

SAN ANTONIO – Jhivvan Jackson had his second double-double of the year and Keaton Wallace drilled five 3-pointers, leading UTSA men's basketball to its third consecutive win, a 98-53 rout of UT Permian Basin, on Sunday evening at the Convocation Center. 
 
UTSA (4-6) blew past UT Permian Basin (10-4) with a 25-2 run in the second half, building on a 13-point halftime lead to earn its third consecutive win. After opening the year with setbacks in the first five games, UTSA has won four of its last five games, including wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and at Texas State last week. 
 
The UTSA win came behind a 28-point, career-high 14-rebound game from Jackson. It marked the second double-double of the year for Jackson and the fourth of his career. Jackson had 24 points and 13 rebounds in the season lidlifter at Oklahoma on Nov. 5. 
 
Jackson, a member of the Oscar Robertson Trophy National Player of the Year watch list, has had 20 or more points in eight of 10 games in 2019-20. Jackson, who entered the game ranked third in the NCAA in points per game, is now averaging 24.9 points per outing as a junior. 
 
Jackson was joined in double-figures by Wallace, who had 18 points, three assists and one steal in 26 minutes. UTSA also got 11 points from Adokiye Iyaye, 10 points and two boards from freshman center Jacob Germany, with Luka Barisic adding nine points. Knox Hellums added eight points. Senior Byron Frohnen, making his 110th consecutive start, had seven rebounds and three assists. 

Carson Newsome led UTPB with 16 points, adding six rebounds in 20 minutes. 
 
UTSA will return to action on Wednesday, traveling to face Oregon State in Houston's Toyota Center, with tipoff slated for 4:30 p.m. with a telecast live on ESPN3. The game will also be available on the Ticket 760 AM and goUTSA.com, with the Voice of the Roadrunners, Andy Everettcalling the action.
 
Each team missed their first five efforts – seven combined 3-pointers – to open the game before Pat Dembley was fouled on a drive to the hoop and sank a free throw to open the scoring. The Roadrunners snapped a 0-for-6 stretch with a Barisic 3-pointer to get on the board with just under 17 minutes remaining. 
 
After UTPB took a 5-3 lead on a transition lay-in from Donoven Carlisle, Barisic's post-move score evened it at 5-5 at the first media break. The Roadrunners out start their rally out of the timeout, getting a corner triple from Wallace, a deep jumper from Jackson and a slam from Jacob Germany for a 12-5 lead. 
 
Wallace gave UTSA a touchdown lead with a pair of free throws – his 23rd and 24th consecutive makes – and consecutive baskets from Adokiye Iyaye – a corner trey – and Jackson – a foot-on-the-line jumper – stretched the UTSA lead to 20-10. Jackson's floater in the lane and Wallace answered a UTPB basket with an open 3-pointer at the top of the key for a 24-12 lead with just under eight minutes left. 
 
The lead extended after Jackson grabbed a rebound and took it coast-to-coast for a 26-12 advantage. The UTSA run went to 12-2 after a Jackson bucket and Wallace drilled his third triple for a 33-14 lead at the final media timeout of the first half. 
 
Jackson successfully used a Germany screen for a deep jumper and a 35-19 lead. After a pair of buckets from the Falcons, Germany sank a 12-foot, baseline jumper for a 37-23 lead. The Roadrunners took a 40-27 lead into halftime after Wallace drilled a step-back triple, his fourth of the period. UTS held UTPB to 31.6 percent shooting from the field in the first half, including a 1 of 14 mark from 3-point land. 
 
The second half opened with a 9-3 UTPB run to cut the lead to 43-36, with Carlisle and Dembley each hitting 3-pointers, with UTSA getting a basket from Atem Bior and a free-throw from Jackson. After a stop of the defensive end, Jackson took the lead to nine with a driving layup with 15:31 left in regulation. 
 
A pair of Germany slams sandwiched a Jackson 3-pointer and the run continued after a step-back Jackson jumper along the baseline for a 54-38 lead. Knox Hellums then made his presence felt with a quick 8-0 run, sinking a 3-pointer, converting an and-one, and drilling a basket at the rim. 
 
Jackson drilled a pair of free throws for a 66-46 lead with just under 10 minutes left and Iyaye answered a free-throw from UTPB with his second corner three of the game. Barisic's second triple of the night lifted UTSA to a 72-47 lead with 8:20 left. 
 
UTSA put the game out of reach with a 20-0 run for an 83-47 lead with five minutes left, getting a basket from Adrian Rodriguez and a triple from Jackson. Wallace made it a 17-0 run with his fifth 3-pointer of the game and Jackson completed and and-one for an 86-47 lead.
