Roadrunners come up short to Vaqueros

EDINBURG, Texas – After a tough battle, the Roadrunners fell short to UTRGV, 75-64 Saturday afternoon.
 
UTSA falls to 3-4 on the season, while the Vaqueros improve to 4-3.
 
UTRGV opened the game with a 5-0 run until Mandi Cooks put the first points on the board at the 7:57 mark. The Vaqueros hit another scoring run and led 10-3 with 6:15 remaining. The Roadrunners started closing the gap with a 7-4 run in the final minutes of the game with 3-pointers from Charlene Mass and Karrington Donald, but a last-second 3-pointer from UTRGV put the lead at six, 19-13, to end the first.
 
The Roadrunners trailed by six at the start of the second quarter, but continued to fight and bridged the gap to two with a layup from Adryana Quezada. With 5:14 left on the clock, Donald hit a 3-pointer to bring UTSA within one, 24-23. The Roadrunners stayed close with UTRGV the remainder of the quarter, outscoring the Vaqueros 16-13. UTSA trailed 29-32 at the half.
 
Coming out of the locker room, UTSA went on a 4-3 run, to trail by one (34-33) with 7:37 remaining. With 4:36 on the clock, Mass passed the ball to Woods, who made a layup to take the lead, 42-41. The Roadrunners hit a 12-2 run over 2:58 of the quarter and led 51-48 going to fourth.
 
The Vaqueros went on a 15-0 run in the fourth quarter, taking back the lead and garnering the win. The Roadrunners scored just 13 points with Donald leading the team with five. Mass broke the scoring drought with a layup with 4:30 remaining as UTSA went on a 5-0 run to cut UTRGV's lead, but it wasn't enough as the Vaqueros put up 27 points.
 
The Roadrunners return to action on Dec. 4 when they travel to San Marcos to play I-35 rival Texas State.

  • UTSA shot 43.5 percent from the field, its best shooting percentage since the game against USW
  • Three Roadrunners hit double-digits, Mikayla Woods (20), Karrington Donald (15) and Charlene Mass (10)
