HONOLULU – The UTSA women's basketball team dropped a 62-50 decision to Hawaii Friday afternoon at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Roadrunners fall to 3-2 on the season, while the Rainbow Wahine improve to 3-1.
The first 10 minutes of the game were slow for both teams with neither team scoring until the 7:29 mark when Hawaii scored first with a layup. The Roadrunners hit a scoring drought until Charlene Mass scored the only points of the first quarter with 2:23 remaining. UH led 12-2 after the first.
UTSA put up 19 points in the second quarter to bridge the gap. Adryana Quezada made back-to-back layups to bring the Roadrunners within five (16-11) with 6:44 remaining. Quezada scored nine points in the quarter as UTSA shot 41.2 percent from the field and trailed 27-21 going to the locker room.
The Roadrunners stayed close in the third quarter, never letting the Rainbow Wahine get ahead more than seven. Karley Larson brought UTSA within five off two free throws after a technical foul from Hawaii. At the 3:43 mark, Larson made a 3-pointer to bring the Roadrunners within three (35-32), but Hawaii continued to find the basket as UTSA trailed 41-36 going to the fourth.
The Rainbow Wahine opened the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run to push a 14-point lead (50-36) with 7:58 remaining. The Roadrunners scored just 14 points with Tija Hawkins leading the team with six.
