Foul-laden second half pushes Oakland past Roadrunners

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- A rugged second half led Oakland to a 75-62 win over UTSA men's basketball, in the second day of the Sunshine Slam, on Saturday evening at the Silver Spurs Arena.
 
UTSA (0-3) fell to the Golden Grizzlies (2-1) in a foul-laden second half as Oakland erased a 36-33 UTSA halftime lead. UTSA was held to just seven buckets in the second half, shooting 21.9 percent in the final stanza and 33.9 percent overall. UTSA was whistled to 27 fouls overall and the two teams combined for 47 total fouls.
 
UTSA was led by a 21-point, five rebound effort from junior Jhivvan Jackson, with Luka Barisic (11) and Keaton Wallace (10) each reaching double figures.

The Roadrunners will return to action on Sunday, taking on Delaware at 2:30 p.m. CT at the Silver Spurs Arena. UTSA opened the scoring with a jumper by Wallace from the wing and after a basket from Oakland, Bior sank a one-handed floater in the paint. Barisic got on the board with the first of his three first-half 3-pointers to take an early lead to 11-6.
 
The Golden Grizzlies evened it up at 14 after the second media timeout but Jackson answered with consecutive takes to the rim to take the lead to 18-14. Oakland tied it at 18 but Jackson used another basket at the rim to take the lead and Barisic sank his second trey for a 26-20 lead. Barisic added his third triple on a corner trey, getting a nifty assist from Jackson on a dribble drive. Wallace stretched the lead to eight with his first triple of the game and Knox Hellums followed an Oakland basket with his first UTSA 3-pointer, nailed from the corner.
 
UTSA took the lead to 36-33 at halftime and immediately added on with a Wallace triple to open the second stanza. The Golden Grizzlies answered with a 14-6 run to take a 49-42 lead at the second media timeout. The play decidedly changed in the second half as the foul count ratcheted up, with the teams called for 15 fouls in the first 10 minutes of the period, pushing each team in the bonus early.  The remainder of the game was more foul trouble, as the Golden Grizzlies were able to extend their lead to 16 late in the game and finished off the win with a 13-point result.
