EWA BEACH, Hawaii — Collin Clark recorded a hole-in-one and is in the top 10 individuals, while UTSA is in eighth place after the first day of the Hoakalei Invitational, which teed off Monday at Hoakalei Country Club (par 72/7,444 yards).
Clark fired a 3-under-par 69 and is tied for seventh place, four shots off the pace set by Mississippi's Charlie Miller with 36 holes remaining. The senior wrote down five birdies in addition to his ace in registering his second sub-70 round of the fall season. He used a 6-iron on the 203-yard, par-3 17th hole for his first hole-in-one in any competitive tournament. Three of the Mansfield native's birdies also occurred on the back nine, where he fired a 4-under 32.
Meanwhile, the Roadrunners carded a 1-under 287 and are in eighth place in the 20-team field. UTSA is just one stroke behind Marquette and a pair of shots out of a tie for fifth between No. 10 Louisville and Marquette. The Birds are one shot ahead of San Diego and two in front of Cal Poly and UMKC in the team race led by No. 41 Mississippi (270).
Will Adams posted the second-best round of the day for UTSA with a 1-under 71. The sophomore from Odessa birdied three of the four par fives, as he wrote down four on the 532-yard second, the 591-yard 13th and 608-yard 18th holes. He is tied for 25th in the 114-man field.
Hunter Bott registered four birdies as part of a 1-over 73 and the freshman from Montgomery is in a tie for 49th place after the opening 18 holes.
David Harrison carded a 74 that was buoyed by three birdies, including back-to-back on Nos. 13-14, and the freshman from Trophy Club shares 62nd place with two rounds remaining.
Christian Fanfelle rounds out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 86th after turning in a 76 that featured a pair of birdies on the back side.
The second round is scheduled for a 1 p.m. CT shotgun start on Tuesday.
