Marshall stuns UTSA

SAN ANTONIO – Marshall handed UTSA a surprising setback in straight sets at the Convocation Center Sunday.

The 3-0 (23-25, 19-25, 21-25) defeat snapped the Roadrunners (13-9, 6-3) home winning streak at five, including all four previous Conference USA matches this season. The Thundering Herd improves to 13-9 overall, including 4-5 in league action.

Freshman Hunter Coppola recorded a team-best .292 hitting percentage (10-3-24), while classmate Courtney Walters recorded 39 assists.

Emily Ramirez finished with a match-high 17 digs, giving her 1,029 in her career.

Kara Teal recorded nine kills with five miscues on 26 attempts, which gives her a .320 career hitting percentage (684-203-1,503). Reaching 1,500 attempts, she now qualifies for the program's hitting percentage record, ranking second in the 25-point rally era (2008-present) and third all-time.

Freshmen Jenna Patton and Bianca Ejesieme teamed up and rejected a Marshall attack and giving the home side a 23-21 edge in game one. After a Thundering Herd time out, they capitalized on a Roadrunner miscue, two service aces and a kill by Clara Debell, securing the final four points and game one victory.

In game two, UTSA ran out to a 9-5 advantage, before the visitors outscored the Roadrunners 20-10, taking a commanding 2-0 advantage into the intermission.

Set three belonged to the Thundering Herd, which rejected four attacks and capitalized on seven attack errors by the Roadrunners.

UTSA returns to competition Friday, kicking off a two-game road trip through the Sunshine State. First serve against Florida Atlantic is at 6 p.m. central time Friday, before the Roadrunners clash with FIU at noon Sunday.
