Fanfelle guides UTSA at Royal Oaks Intercollegiate

DALLAS — Christian Fanfelle posted his fifth career top-20 finish to lead the UTSA men's golf team to 11th place at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate, which concluded Tuesday at Royal Oaks Country Club (par 71/7,068 yards).

Fanfelle tied for 19th with an even-par 213 to help the Roadrunners to an 874 (301-285-288), 29 shots ahead of Nebraska and only six behind Iowa.

Bolstered by a season-best round of 69 on the final day after opening with a pair of 72s, Fanfelle moved up nine spots to register his second straight top 20. The sophomore from San Antonio wrote down birdies on the 456-yard, par-4 third, the 475-yard, par-4 13th and the 512-yard, par-5 18th holes in nearly matching his overall collegiate-best scorecard of 68 set last season at the Lake Charles Invitational. Fanfelle played the par fives at 2-under and turned in nine birdies for the tournament.

Collin Clark was the second highest-finishing Roadrunner, tying for 42nd with a 219. The senior from Mansfield posted a 73 on the final day that was highlighted by a birdie on No. 13 one day after recording the best round by a UTSA player during the event, a 3-under 68.

David Harrison was one shot and two places behind his senior teammate, tying for 44th with a 220. The freshman from nearby Trophy Club had 15 pars and a birdie on the 434-yard, par-4 10th hole during a final-round 72 after opening with a 73-75—148 on Monday.

Will Adams wrote down six birdies, including four during a five-hole stretch as part of a 33 on the front nine, en route to posting a 74 on Tuesday. The sophomore from Odessa Permian High School — who led UTSA with 11 birdies during the tournament — tied for 55th with a 223, as he bounced back from a 78 in the opening round with an even-par 71 on Monday afternoon.

Chad Sewell closed out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 62nd with a 229 (79-74-76).

Competing as individuals, Hunter Bott tied for 44th with a 220 (73-74-73) and Adam House was 60th with a 227 (75-76-76).

No. 6 SMU claimed the team title with an 825, followed by 11th-ranked Baylor (836), Liberty (840) and Michigan (848) in the top four.

The Roadrunners will close out the fall season next Monday-Wednesday, Oct. 28-30, at the Hoakalei Invitational in Ewa Beach, Hawaii.
