Trio of sub-70 rounds headlines first day of Jim West Challenge

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Ana Gonzalez, Hannah Holzmann and Madison Kidd all posted sub-70 rounds to headline action for the UTSA women's golf team on Sunday at the Jim West Challenge at Kissing Tree Golf Club (par 72/6,033 yards).
 
Holzmann registered the low round of the day for the Roadrunners with a 4-under-par 68 for the opening 18 holes, while Kidd and Gonzalez each turned in a 69 during the 36-hole day.
 
Gonzalez paced the UTSA lineup with a 1-over 145 on the opening day of the 54-hole event. The junior bounced back from a 76 in the morning with a 69 in the afternoon that featured four birdies, including a trio during a five-hole stretch on the front nine. The Monterrey, Mexico, native is tied for 43rd place with 18 holes left to play.
 
Holzmann opened the tournament by posting a collegiate career-best 68 that was highlighted by six birdies, three on each side. The sophomore from San Antonio turned in a 78 in the second round and stands only one shot back of her teammate in a tie for 54th at 2-over 146. Her 68 is tied for the fifth-best round versus par in program history.
 
Camryn Carreon and Nicole Polivchak submitted identical scores of 74 and 73 for each round and are part of a tie for 58th at 3-over 147.
 
Carreon, a freshman from San Antonio, wrote down three birdies in her opening round before recording five in the second, including three straight on Nos. 16-18.
 
Polivchak, a junior transfer from Sarasota, Fla., had a combined four birdies and a team-high 25 pars in her two rounds.
 
Kidd posted a 69 in the first round on the strength of five birdies, four coming as part of a 34 on the front side. The senior from Lake Jackson settled for an 82 in the afternoon and is tied for 69th (151).
 
The Roadrunners are in 14th place after posting a 578 (285-293), six shots ahead of Missouri and only one stroke behind Memphis. UTSA's 3-under 285 for the opening 18 holes is tied for the ninth-best team score versus par in school annals.
 
No. 10 Mississippi and 40th-ranked Texas Tech share the team lead after 36 holes at 24-under 552, while there is a four-way tie atop the individual leaderboard at 8-under 136.
 
The final round will tee off at 8:30 a.m. Monday.
