Gonzalez, Holzmann lead UTSA at Jim West Challenge

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Ana Gonzalez and Hannah Holzmann placed in the top 45 to lead the UTSA women's golf team to a tie for 12th place at the Jim West Challenge, which wrapped up Monday at Kissing Tree Golf Club (par 72/6,033 yards).
 
Gonzalez tied for 38th and Holzmann shared 43rd place to help the Roadrunners tie Kansas State for 12th with an 870 (285-293-292), four shots ahead of Memphis and only one stroke behind UNLV.
 
Gonzalez turned in a 2-over-par 218 that was highlighted by a 3-under 69 in the second round on Sunday. The junior from Monterrey, Mexico, closed with a 73 after opening with a 76 and the reigning Conference USA individual medalist shared the team lead of 11 birdies with Holzmann during the 54-hole event, four of which came during her final round.
 
Meanwhile, Holzmann was one shot back with a 219 that featured a collegiate career-best 68 for the first 18 holes that is tied for fifth-best scorecard versus par in program history. The sophomore from San Antonio matched Gonzalez with a final-day 73, a five-stroke improvement from her second round, on the strength of a pair of birdies.
 
Camryn Carreon finished third among Roadrunners after tying for 51st with a 221. The freshman from San Antonio followed Sunday's 74-73—147 with a 2-over 74 that was headlined by a birdie on the par-4 18th hole.
 
Madison Kidd registered UTSA's best round of the final day with an even-par 72 that included four birdies, three on a four-hole stretch on the back nine. The senior from Lake Jackson tied for 53rd with a 223 (69-72-72).
 
Nicole Polivchak rounded out the UTSA lineup in 71st (74-73-82—229).
 
No. 15 Mississippi captured the team title with an 836, followed by No. 40 Texas Tech (846) and 46th-ranked Miami (848).
 
UTSA will return to the course on Feb. 10-11 when they travel to Kyle, Texas, where they will look to defend their team title at the Texas State Invitational.
