Soccer garners first conference win of the season

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The UTSA soccer team garnered its first conference win of the season with a 3-2 overtime victory over Marshall Sunday afternoon.
 
The Roadrunners improve to 5-6-1, 1-4-0 C-USA, while Marshall falls to 4-10-0, 2-4-0 C-USA on the season.
 

 
Marshall scored early with a goal in the second minute of the game. Marah Abu-Tayeh took a shot and it was saved by Jil Schneider, but the ball wasn't cleared in time as Farah Abu-Tayeh shot and scored.
 
Ellis Patterson tied the game with a goal in the fourth minute. Jil Scheider kicked the ball to the middle of the field, Nicole Galan flicked the ball to Patterson as she ran with it and took a shot from inside the penalty box as the ball flew passed the keeper and into the far corner.
 
With about a minute left on the clock, Patterson scored again for the Roadrunners to put them in the lead. Isa Hernandez fed the ball to Patterson who dribbled down the field and shot as the ball was tipped off the keeper and went into the goal.
 
Just 20 seconds later, the Thundering Herd scored to tie the game back up and push it into overtime.
 
In the 93rd minute of the game, Abby Kassal passed the ball to Patterson who took a shot and it was stopped by the keeper, bounced out of her hands and Kassal tapped it in for the game-winning goal.
 
UTSA posted 15 shots, while Marshall had 16. Both teams had seven shots on target. Jil Schneider picked up her first conference win with five saves on the day.
 
The Roadrunners return to action on Sept. 17 when they host Southern Miss at 7 p.m.
