Roadrunners conclude play at Ron Wesbrook Invitational

BEAUMONT, Texas -- UTSA men's tennis completed play at the three-day Ron Wesbrook Invitational over the weekend, hosted by Lamar at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.

Four Roadrunners competed in the Wesbrooks Invitational, including a pair of doubles teams.

"All in all, this weekend was just what these guys needed," UTSA assistant coach Cullen Dees said. "A lot of tough matches, a little bit of tough weather conditions, and some wins and losses to build on. We will take the things we didn't do so well and look to improve - we have to compete better in some key moments in matches, and stay tough mentally all the way through. But we did a lot of good this weekend too. We will take what we did well and carry it over to our next tournament at Rice this coming weekend."

Freshman Joao Alcantara (Santos, Brazil) and sophomore Alan Sanson (Santiago, Chile) won the consolation bracket in doubles, played on Sunday. The duo lost their opening round matchup on Friday, 6-4 but bounced back on Saturday with a 6-2 win and used a 7-5 result on Sunday to claim the second tier of the doubles bracket.

Sanson went 0-3 in his singles matches, falling vs. Lamar's Axel Vila Antuna, 6-3, 6-2, Tyler's Lamar Bartley, 6-2, 6-0, and UT Arlington's Alejandro Hayen, 6-2, 5-7, 10-6.

Alcantara posted a 1-2 mark in singles, with a win over Nicholls' Prasanna Bagade, 6-2, 6-3, and losses vs. Lamar's C. Paton Canal, 6-1, 6-3 and Tyler's Rohit Patel, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8. It marked the collegiate debut weekend for Alcantara, who fought off illness on Friday to win his singles match on Saturday.

In doubles, Patrick Poestginer (Ennsdorf, Austria) and Kaito Nishihara (Austin, Texas) formed a pair, falling on Friday and Saturday in their matches.

Poestinger went 2-1 in singles play over the weekend, earning wins over Lamar's Joshua Taylor, 6-2, 4-6, 11-9, and Nicholls' Omar Mosey, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 10-7. After falling in the first match of the day on Saturday, he bounced back with a strong performance in the tiebreak to post the win.

Nishihara opened singles play on Saturday after a first-day bye, taking down Nicholls' Antoine Martin-Thiriat, 6-1, 4-6, 10-5 in a touch tiebreak. He fell on Saturday in a pair of singles tests, vs. Lamar's Blessing Benibo, 6-1, 6-3, and vs. Tyler Junior College's Ryo Minakata, 6-3, 6-2. Nishihara fell on Sunday to UT Arlington's Ricardo Alban, 6-2, 6-2.
