SAN ANTONIO -- In a match that featured 32 ties and 10 lead changes, UTSA dropped a tightly contested match 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 20-25, 22-25) against Maryland Saturday at the Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners fall to 2-4 overall, while the Terps improved to 4-2.
Hannah Roberts registered a team-high 13 kills for the Roadrunners and Kirby Smith posted her third double-double (11 kills, 10 digs) in six matches. Sophomore Mia Perales and freshman Courtney Walters accounted for 41 of the team's 46 assists. Perales led the way with 21, while Walters extended her double-digit assist streak to six matches with 20.
UTSA grabbed the early 1-0 lead with a six-point win in the opening set but Maryland outscored the home side by 11 over the final three sets - all victories by the guests - earning the win. Emily Ramirez made one diving save after another and matched Smith for the team lead in digs with 10.
In the second set, the teams traded leads six times and were knotted 12. Even At 20-20, The Terps grabbed the final advantage and closed with five of the final six points to even the match at one set apiece.
The teams played to a virtual draw through the first half of the match as Maryland held an 11-10 edge, before closing with 15 of the 25 points.
Neither side grasped a large lead in the fourth set, changing lead three times and recording 13 ties. The Roadrunners moved in front at 18-17 on a kill by Lopez but that was the last lead of the night for the home side. Maryland ran off three consecutive tallies and eight of the final 12 to nail down the victory.
The Terps registered 53 kills to UTSA's 49.
Maryland tallied 45 digs to the Roadrunners 43 and collected two more service aces at 8-6.
UTSA's Montse Castro recorded the only solo block of the match but Maryland held the edge in total rejections at 9-7.
