CHICAGO -- Sophomore Briana Gonzalez – a product of San Antonio's Churchill High School – paced the UTSA women's cross country team at the 42nd annual Lakefront Invitational, hosted by Loyola on Saturday afternoon.
Gonzalez finished as the top Roadrunner in the 5K event held at Chicago's Montrose Harbor. She clocked a 19:15.37 to cross 71st and help UTSA place 16th in the field that included the 10th-ranked team in the country in Wisconsin, which placed third behind Northern Illinois (ranked No. 11 in its region) and Loyola (No. 12).
Finishing just 10 seconds behind Gonzalez was junior Amber Boyd (Copperas Cove, Texas), who placed 86th in 19:25.11. Sophomore Abby Balli (Pasadena, Calif.) placed 99th with a 19:35.28, while senior Olivia Flores (Del Rio, Texas) was No. 107 (19:41.77).
Sophomore Marissa Martinez (San Antonio, Texas) crossed in 19:54 for 122nd, while senior Colleen Gilbert (Austin, Texas) finished 124th (19:57.97) and sophomore Brooke Lomax (Katy, Texas) completed UTSA's seven-runner lineup in 128th (20:02.32).
UTSA will return to action on Oct. 19 in College Station at the Arturo Barrios Invitational hosted by Texas A&M.
