DALLAS — David Harrison is tied for ninth place and the UTSA men's golf team is in a seventh-place tie after the first round of the Trinity Forest Invitational on Sunday at Trinity Forest Golf Club (par 71/7,486 yards).
Harrison carded a 1-under-par 70 that was highlighted by a trio of birdies and the freshman is part of an eight-way tie for ninth place with 36 holes left to play. Playing near his hometown of Trophy Club, the freshman wrote down birdies on the 550-yard, par-5 first, the 570-yard, par 5 seventh and the 215-yard, par 3 17th holes en route to turning in his second 70 of the young season. A former standout for Byron Nelson High School, Harrison is only three shots off the pace of 4-under 67 set by Arizona State's Alex del Rey.
Meanwhile, Collin Clark shot an even-par 71 and is tied for 17th place. The senior matched Harrison with three birdies, as he circled numbers on the 315-yard, par-4 fifth, the 505-yard, par 4-ninth and 440-yard, par-4 15th holes. It marked the second par-or-better round of the fall for the Mansfield, Texas native.
Will Adams is one stroke behind Clark after recording a 72 that was buoyed by 16 pars and a birdie on the 429-yard, par-4 16th. The sophomore out of Odessa Permian High School is part of a 12-way tie for 25th place.
Chad Sewell and Hunter Bott each carded a 74 and are tied for 52nd. Sewell, a junior from Conroe, turned in three birdies, while Bott, a freshman from Montgomery, registered a pair in his opening round.
UTSA posted a 3-over 287 and is tied with Ball State for seventh place in a leaderboard that shows the top eight teams separated by a mere eight shots. The Roadrunners are four strokes ahead of a three-way tie between Denver, Kansas State and Sam Houston State (291). They trail Rice by one shot and Houston by three in the 17-team field led by Arizona State and SMU (279).
The second round is scheduled for Monday and the Roadrunners will tee off of No. 1 beginning at 8 a.m.
