SAN MARCOS, Texas – UTSA wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a sweep of George Washington at Strahan Arena Saturday.
The Roadrunners improve to 7-6 with the 3-0 victory (25-14, 25-20, 25-18) and the Colonials drop to 6-7.
Senior Brianna McCulloch registered her first kill of the match with both teams tied at 4-4 in game one, which jump started the UTSA offense, scoring 20 of the next 30 points and cruising to a 25-14 victory. The Roadrunners hit .407 (13-2-27) and held the opposition to just a .107 percentage (10-7-28) in the opening game.
After a back-and-forth affair in the second set, UTSA closed with an 8-2 run, headlined by three kills from sophomore Kirby Smith that secured the 2-0 advantage at intermission.
The Roadrunners jumped out to a nine-point lead at 15-6 and George Washington called timeout. A kill by the Colonials' Patty Valle and three-consecutive service aces by Bella Bowman cut the edge to five at 15-10. UTSA used a timeout and after the short break, the Roadrunners outscored the home side 8-6 and drew them within two points of the sweep.
Smith made it match point with her 13thkill and after and McCulloch slammed home her 11thfor the final point of the match.
UTSA returns home Sept. 27 when the Roadrunners host Charlotte in the Conference USA opener for both teams. First serve is 6 p.m.
