Football Notebook: Physicality shines in Thursday scrimmage

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA held its 12th session of preseason training camp on Thursday morning at the UTSA Football Practice Fields.

The Roadrunners completed their 13th day of training camp and their 12th practice on Thursday with a fully-padded scrimmage.

"Rugged practice today, in a good way," UTSA head coach Frank Wilson said. "The physicality of our football team came to bare itself on this day. A lot of really good things. We had some long balls. Good to see Tariq Woolen continue to make big catches down the field; to use his size and speed to advantage us as an offense. Big run today from Sincere McCormick, who got loose for a 75-plus yarder and ran away from the secondary. Good to see that. A defense that began to show themselves in dominant fashion in this practice. Again, our guys up front competed really well. We had a couple of PBUs when we got down in the red zone by the secondary that would not give up the one-on-one matchups, something we want to be better at this year. To contest those balls, to fight and claw for victory, we saw that from our secondary on this day. A special teams unit that went 100 percent in PATs and field goals throughout the duration today. All in all, a great performance."

UTSA will practice on Friday before debuting the team as part of Runners at the Park, presented by Methodist Texsan Hospital, at Park West Athletics Complex on Saturday. The event will feature an open practice from 9-11 a.m. and a post-practice autograph session.

"Big day for us. We'll put on for our fans. We'll get a chance to show some of the things that we do from a skill-position, big-man standpoint, that highlights what we do – the core beliefs of our football team – we'll put it on display for our fans. We'll be in some type of scrimmage formats throughout the day – you'll see us in a competitive manner there. But probably most of all, these fans will get to see their players. These players will get a chance to embrace their fans, as post-practice will be an opportunity to sign autographs, take pictures and thank them for being such loyal fans for us."

UTSA opens the 2019 slate on Aug. 31, hosting Incarnate Word at 5 p.m. at the Alamodome. For tickets, call or text 210-458-UTSA (8872) or visit goUTSA.com/tickets.
