PLANO — UTSA sophomore Will Adams won the Texas Golf Association's North Amateur in a sudden-death playoff Sunday at The Courses at Watters Creek.
Adams carded an 8-under-par 208 to finish in a tie atop the leaderboard with two other players after 54 holes of stroke play. On the second hole of a sudden-death playoff, the Odessa Permian High School product registered a birdie on the par-5 18th to secure the trophy.
Adams opened the tournament on Friday with a 3-under 69 that featured six birdies and then posted a 4-under 68 behind six more birdies on Saturday. He entered the final round with a two-shot lead and wrote down four more birdies en route to a 71 in Sunday's final round before winning the playoff.
As a true freshman for the Roadrunners in 2018-19, Adams recorded a 74.46 stroke average and a pair of top-20 finishes. He fired a 5-under 211 that was highlighted by a collegiate career-best 65 to finish eighth at the Arizona Medalist Intercollegiate and he tied for 16th at the Lone Star Invitational in his UTSA debut.
