Sewell set for U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA junior Chad Sewell will compete in the 119th U.S. Amateur, which gets underway Monday, Aug. 12, at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in Village of Pinehurst, N.C.

Sewell, who earned his way into the field of 312 golfers as a first alternate after posting a 141 in a 36-hole qualifier on July 22 at Champions Golf Club near Houston, will tee off in the first round at 9:30 a.m. Central time Monday on Pinehurst Course No. 4. His second round tee time is set for 2:45 p.m. Tuesday on Pinehurst No. 2, which has hosted numerous U.S. Opens and PGA Tour Championships.

The low 64 players will advance to match play, which gets underway Wednesday. FS1 will televise match play rounds on Aug. 14-16 with air times at 3 p.m. CT each day.

A native of Conroe, Sewell posted a top-10 finish at the Rice Planters Amateur in June in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. He fired a 6-under-par 282, which included three straight 2-under 70s, to tie for seventh place at that event. He also qualified for the Texas State Open, where he shot a 144 at The Cascades Club in late July in Tyler.

As a sophomore, Sewell recorded a 73.29 stroke average in 31 rounds and turned in a trio of top-10 finishes, including a tie for fourth place at the Louisiana Classics.
