Hometown Showdown to feature River Rally on Thursday

SAN ANTONIO — The Hometown Showdown between UTSA and UIW — the first meeting on the football field between San Antonio's two NCAA Division I universities — will feature a River Rally on Thursday, Aug. 29, on the River Walk.

Admission is free to the River Rally and the San Antonio community is encouraged to line the River Walk along the route from the International Center clockwise around to Arneson River Theatre. A complete route map will be shared prior to the event.

Festivities are slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. with a river parade featuring boats carrying members of each football team, as well as dignitaries, bands and cheerleaders from both schools.

The boats will arrive at Arneson River Theatre at 7 p.m. for the River Rally, which will feature speakers from both universities and football programs, as well as a Battle of the Bands.

UTSA and UIW will square off in the season opener for both teams on Saturday, Aug. 31. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. at the Alamodome.

"We are so excited about working together with UIW and the City of San Antonio to put on an event and a football game for all to enjoy," UTSA Vice President and Athletics Director Dr. Lisa Campos said. "The River Rally will be a free family-friendly event at one of the iconic sites in this great city, and we hope to see thousands of fans lining the River Walk to help build up excitement for the game. No one puts on events better than San Antonio, and we're looking forward to uniting the community for the River Rally and Hometown Showdown."

Other home games on UTSA's schedule include Army West Point (Sept. 14), UAB (Oct. 12), Rice (Oct. 19), Southern Miss (Nov. 16) and Florida Atlantic (Nov. 23).
