SAN ANTONIO -- Bashiru Abdullahi, the 2019 Big West Men's Track & Field Freshman of the Year, has been added to the 2019-20 UTSA signing class, it was announced by Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox.
"We are thrilled to welcome Bashiru into the UTSA family," Fox said. "Bashiru quickly established himself as one of the top hurdlers in the nation as a freshman and he'll be a great asset to our roster. We think Bashiru has great potential and we're eager to help him accomplish his goals as a Roadrunner."
Abdullahi joins the Roadrunners after a strong 2019 season at CSUN, where he was tabbed the conference freshman of the year. While at CSUN, Abdullahi won the 110-meter hurdles at the 2019 Big West Outdoor Championships with the second-fastest time in school history (13.80) and earned honorable mention All-America accolades with a 17th-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June in Austin, Texas.
In addition, Abdullahi placed seventh at the league championships in the 400m hurdles (53.99), while manning the third leg of CSUN's second-place 4x100m relay team. He competed in 10 hurdle races in the 110m, placing third or better six times.
During the indoor season at CSUN, he broke the school record in the 60m hurdles (7.75) at New Mexico's Don Kirby Invitational.
A native of Nigeria, Abdullahi ran 13.58 in the 110m hurdles in the IAAF World Junior Championships in Poland in July. He is a three-time winner in the event at the 2014, '15 and '18 African Championships.
