Patel selected by White Sox in seventh round of MLB Draft

UTSA Baseball Draft History

SAN ANTONIO, Texas --
On the second day of the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft, right-handed pitcher Karan Patel became the second-highest draft pick in UTSA program history when the Chicago White Sox selected him with the third pick of the seventh round (200th overall) Tuesday.

The Cincinati Reds drafted third baseman Mark Schramek in the first round (40th overall) of the 2002 draft.

Patel, a 6-foot 215-pound Sugar Land, Texas native, earned 2019 All-Conference USA First Team honors after posting a 2.84 ERA and striking out 104 batters in 92.0 innings of work. He became the first UTSA pitcher in the 28-year history of the program to record 100 strikeouts in a season. His 10.17 strikeouts per nine innings pitched is the third-best ratio in school history.

In 15 starts, Patel posted 10 quality starts, including nine in succession, allowing three or fewer earned runs in 13 games and working at least 6.0 innings in 11 contests. He fanned at least five batters and walked three or less in all but two starts.

His 2.84 ERA ranked third lowest among all Conference USA pitchers. He placed fourth in innings pitched, strikeouts, and games started, while his opponent batting average was eighth best and he fanned the 10th most batters looking (24).

Over the four-year career, Patel posted an 11-16 mark in 64 appearances, including 43 starts, with a 4.36 ERA in 250 innings pitched. His 250 strikeouts rank third all-time in school history. He fanned 9.00 batters per nine innings pitched and held opponents to a .245 batting average, placing him fourth in both categories.

Patel becomes the 39th player in the history of the program to be drafted. At least one UTSA player has been drafted or signed every year of the program's history except 1993 and 1996. Since 2000, the Roadrunners had at least one player drafted every year except 2001, 2007 and 2016.
