Summer Baseball Notebook; Vol. I

SAN ANTONIO, Texas– Instead of enjoying their summer vacation, 10 UTSA ballplayers are working on their chosen craft in seven different wooden bat leagues throughout the United States. 
 
Summer baseball is a way for collegiate players to strengthen their skills in hopes to improve for next season and possibly draw attention from scouts.

Taylor Barber, Jr., INF – Sunflower Collegiate League (Hutchinson Monarchs)
Summer: Named to the West Division All-Star Roster for the 2019 Westar Energy All-Star Game, which is scheduled for July 2 at 7 p.m. at Eck Stadium on the campus of Wichita State … Hitting .395 (15 for 38) with four home runs, one double, 11 runs scored and 11 RBIs in 10 games … Registered a .531 on-base percentage, .737 slugging and a 1.268 OPS … Leads the league in on-base percentage and slugging, second in the league in home runs, seventh in batting average.
 
Zachary Griggs, So., RHP – California Collegiate League (Arroyo Saco Saints)
Summer: Held opponents to a .167 batting average (1 for 6), allowing no runs on one hit, two walks and punching out three in first two outings, one inning of work each … In three appearances on the mound – all out of the bullpen – allowed four earned runs in four innings (9.00 ERA) on four hits, five walks and fanning six.
 
Chase Hacker, So., INF – Northwood's League (Kokomo Jackrabbits)
Summer: Riding a four-game hitting streak (8 for 29) and registered one knock or more in seven of the last eight, raising his average nearly 100 points during the span … Hitting .170 (9 for 53) with two doubles, six runs, six RBIs and four walks in 18 games. 
 
Chase Keng, So., OF - Northwoods League (Kokomo Jackrabbits)
Summer: Reached base in 17 of 22 games, hitting .256 (22 for 86) with two doubles, scoring 12 runs and driving in eight … Recorded five multi-hit games – all in the last 10 – including a 3 for 4 performance against Battle Creek (June 23) his last time out … Raised average nearly 70 points in the last 10 games with a .324 average (12 for 37) with six runs and six RBIs.
 
Griffin Paxton, Jr., INF – West Coast League (Victoria Harbourcats)
Summer: Opened the summer with a 12-game hitting streak, before having it snapped when he failed to record a knock in a pinch-hit appearance at Portland (June 21) … Sporting a .356 batting average (16 for 45) with a double, a triple, scoring 12 times and knocking in four runs … Swiped two bases in three opportunities.
 
Dylan Rock, So., OF – California Collegiate League (OC Riptide)
Summer: Reached base in 13 of 15 games, including 12 with a hit … Registered a .373 (19 for 51) batting average with four doubles, 11 runs and 11 RBIs … Added nine walks and has been hit by three pitches, reaching safely in nearly have of his 63 plate appearances, boasting a .492 on-base percentage (31 for 64) … Successful in nine of 11 stolen base attempts.
 
Shane Sirdashney, Fr., OF - Kansas Collegiate League Baseball (Liberal Bee Jays)
Summer: Hitting .255 (12 for 47) in 12 games, including three doubles and one home run, with 12 runs scored and seven RBIs … Recorded five multi-hit games, including a 2 for 4 performance in his first game with a home run and three runs scored … Caught stealing in one of four attempts on the base paths.
 
Bryan Sturges, So., INF - California Collegiate League (Healdsburg Prune Packers)
Summer: Leads the league with a .517 (15 for 29) in league games … Owns a 15-game on-base streak, reaching safely with a base hit in 12 contests … Hitting .413 (26 for 63) in all games with four doubles and two home runs, scoring 26 runs and driving in 14 … Boosted on-base percentage to .543 (44 for 63) with 14 base-on-balls and hit by four pitches, while fanning just eight times in 81 plate appearances … Registered a perfect 11 for 11 in stolen-base attempts.
 
Jonathan Tapia, Jr., INF – Texas Collegiate League (Victoria Generals)
Summer: Riding a modest three-game hitting streak, registering a .273 (3 for 11) average with a triple and five runs scored … Posted a .235 (8 for 34) batting average in 11 games, including a triple with nine runs and two RBIs … Swiped 12 bases while being caught just once.
 
A.G. Yowell, Fr., RHP – Coastal Plain League (Florence Redwolves)
Summer: Posted an 0-1 record with an 8.00 ERA on in four appearances on the mound including one start … Allowed eight runs – all earned – on 12 hits, three walks and seven strikeouts in nine innings of work … Tossed 3.2 scoreless innings, scattering three hits, one walk and punching out four batters in his last two outings.
