KINGSTON, Jamaica — Former UTSA All-American Adrian Riley earned the silver medal in the long jump at the Jamaica National Championships on Saturday at National Stadium.
On his first attempt in the Men's 20+ Division of the long jump, Riley leaped to a distance of 7.95 meters (26-1) to take the lead after one round. Tajay Gayle measured 8.24m on his second jump to move past Riley into first, but the former Roadrunner moved into the finals and held on for second place ahead of Shawn-D Thompson, who finished third (7.80m).
With his runner-up showing, Riley now has put himself in position to earn a spot to represent Jamaica in the event at the Pan American Games, which are scheduled for July 26-Aug. 11 in Lima, Peru.
Riley was a two-time All-American for UTSA, earning second-team honors in the decathlon with a 12th-place finish (7,520) at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships a year after collecting honorable mention accolades in the long with with a 15th-place leap of 7.44m). He set the school record in the outdoor long jump with a 7.91m effort as a senior in 2018 and he ranks second with 7,576 points on UTSA's all-time performers list in the decathlon.
