ARDMORE, Okla. —UTSA men's golf signee David Harrison earned a spot in the USGA U.S. Junior Amateur after winning a qualifier in a sudden death playoff Monday at Dornick Hills Country Club.
Harrison, an incoming freshman, fired a 2-under-par 68 on the 6,716-yard, par-70 layout but the Trophy Club, Texas, native needed six extra holes to earn the lone qualifying spot. Harrison posted a 36 on the front nine that featured birdies on the 434-yard, par-4 third and 566-yard, par-5 sixth holes. He then wrote down red numbers on Nos. 10-12 and again on the 16th en route to a 4-under 32 on the back.
With Harrison and one other amateur tied at 2-under after 18 holes and just one qualifying spot on the line, the two players headed to a sudden death playoff. The two were even until the sixth hole, where the future Roadrunner recorded a par to win the event and book his trip next month to Toledo, Ohio.
The 72nd U.S. Junior Amateur will be held on July 15-20 at Inverness Club in Toledo. FS1 will air two hours of live coverage beginning at 1 p.m. CT on July 19-20.
Earlier this year while competing in his second straight Class 6A state tournament for Byron Nelson High School, Harrison fired a 5-under-par 139 at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown to tie for the individual lead at the end of 36 holes. He bounced back from an opening-round 73 with a 6-under 66 to force a playoff and he eventually settled for runner-up honors to help guide the Bobcats to sixth place in the team race.
Harrison, who signed his National Letter of Intent last November to join UTSA, captured the District 5-6A title with a Byron Nelson High School-record 138 that included a Robson Ranch Golf Club course record 66 in the final round. He tied for individual medalist honors at the Region I-6A tournament after firing a 68-69—137 at Tangle Creek Golf Club in Grand Prairie.
