Janicek receives Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship from C-USA

DALLAS — UTSA senior Charlette Janicek of the women's track & field/cross country program has received a Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship, as Conference USA announced Monday the league's 14 honorees.

C-USA annually grants the $4,000 scholarship to distinguished graduates selected by the league's faculty athletics representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.

Janicek graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology with a concentration in athletics medicine while carrying a 3.85 GPA. A four-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, she earned three C-USA Academic Medals and has been named to the UTSA President's List four times and the Dean's List twice. She will attend the University of Texas Medical Branch to work toward her doctorate degree in physical therapy.

A native of Sealy, Texas, Janicek won the 3,000 meters with an 11:12.99 clocking at the FasTrak Invitational in January and posted her career-best time in the event of 10:53.44 at the C-USA Indoor Championships the following month. As a freshman in 2016, she helped the distance medley relay team to sixth place at the league's indoor meet and also ran on the ninth-place DMR at the 2018 C-USA Indoor.

Janicek also competed in five cross country meets as a senior last fall. She clocked a 19:43 in the 5,000m at the C-USA Championships and a 24:46.8 for 6K at the NCAA South Central Region Championships. As a freshman in 2015, she placed 15th at the Aggie Opener and 16th at the Islander Splash.

This is the 11th year the award has been named for Dr. Castaneda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and faculty athletics representative before passing away in November 2008.
