SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Senior second baseman Brian Arias was selected by the Houston Astros in the 28thround of the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft Wednesday.
During his career, the 6-foot 205-pound San Antonio native finished his collegiate career ranking in the top-10 in most offensive categories in UTSA history.
Arias' 281 hits, 189 runs scored, 59 doubles and 543 assists are second in program history. His 854 at-bats is third highest in school history while his 450 total bases place him fourth and 115 walks rank fifth. Arias finished his career seventh all-time with a .329 batting average, .415 on-base percentage, 30 home runs and 995 chances in the field. He cracked the top-10 list in eighth place with 138 runs-batted-in and 36 stolen bases, while his 10-career triples and .527 slugging percentage occupied the 10thposition in the records books.
The Marshall High School graduate earned 2019 All-Conference USA First Team honors after hitting .336 (72-for-214), including 14 doubles, 10 home runs and two triples. He scored a team-high 58 runs and drove in 40 more in 55 games during his senior campaign.
Arias tallied multi-hit games 20 times in 2019, good for second most on the team, driving in at least two runs, a team-best, 12 times. During a 10-game season-long hitting streak from April 18 to May 4, he went 22-for-40 (.550), including six home runs and four doubles, scoring 12 runs and driving in 14. His six home runs occurred in six consecutive games during the span.
He is the 40th player drafted in the history of the program and second in 2019.
