Baseball closes midweek schedule with win over UIW

SAN ANTONIO – In the final midweek game of 2019, UTSA defeated UIW 6-4 at Roadrunner Field Tuesday.

With four runs in the second, the Roadrunners built a 6-0 advantage after four innings, improving to 23-25. The Cardinals rallied with two in the fifth and a pair in the seventh, dropping to 32-16.

Nick Thornquist delivered the key hit for UTSA, driving in three with two outs in the second, doubling inside third and down into the left-field corner.

Dylan Rock put the Roadrunners on the board in the first, scoring Bryan Arias from second, with a single through the left side of the Cardinals' infield.

Making his third-career start, Hunter Grimes earned the victory – tossing a predetermined two innings – allowing no runs on just one hit and striking out one. Hunter Mason relieved Grimes in the third and retired all six batters he faced in 2.0 innings of work on 18 pitches, 12 for strike.

Ryan Stacy led off the fourth with a home run to left center, pushing the Roadrunners advantage up to a half-dozen.

After a two-run homer by UIW's Lee Thomas in the fifth, Ryan Gonzalez trimmed the margin to three with a lead-off long ball in the seventh. The Cardinals loaded the bases but UTSA's Jake Harrison limited the damage inducing a sacrifice fly and ended the threat with a double play.

Bradley Griggs tossed the final two frames for the home side, retiring all six hitters he face, including three by strikeout.

Stacy, Rock, Chase Keng and Shane Sirdashney registered two hits each for the Roadrunners. Thornquist and Aldo Buendia accounted for the other two hits.

UTSA hosts Florida Atlantic in the final home series of the year. First pitch of the opener is Friday at 6 p.m.
