CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte avoided a sweep by UTSA in the final series of the 2019 regular season with two runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Despite the 5-4 setback at Hayes Stadium Saturday, the Roadrunners qualified for the 2019 Conference USA Baseball Championship presented by Air Force Reserve with a 26-28 overall record, including 13-16 in conference play.
UTSA eliminated the 49ers Friday and they end the season with a 21-31-1 mark overall and 11-18-1 in league action.
Rafi Vazquez gave Charlotte the early lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first.
Courtesy of three errors in a two-inning span, UTSA moved in front 3-2, with one run in the second and two in the third.
Tommy Bullock evened the score at 3-3 with a solo homer in the fifth but the Roadrunners Bryan Arias reestablished the one-run advantage with his ninth long ball of the season in the eighth.
Vazquez walked to open the home eighth and scored on a RBI single by Carter Foster. Bullock drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs for the eventual game winner.
Dylan Rock and Garrett Moon registered two hits each for UTSA.
The Roadrunners earned the final spot in the Conference USA Championships and as the No. 8 seed will face off with No. 1 seed FAU on Wednesday in the third game of the tourney, slated for 4 p.m. in the opening of the second session of games in the day.
