TEXARKANA, Ark. — Sean Meehan won the final three holes of his semifinal match Wednesday to help guide the UTSA men's golf team to a 3-2 win over UAB and into the Air Force Reserve Conference USA Championship Match against Middle Tennessee at 1:30 p.m. today at Texarkana Country Club (par 72/6,935 yards).
Trailing his match against John Snoddy by one entering No. 16, Meehan birdied his final three holes to claim the decisive matchup 2-up and push the Roadrunners into the final match against the Blue Raiders, who edged Charlotte by the same 3-2 count.
Meehan turned in a four on the 560-yard, par-5 16th to make his match all square. The San Antonio Johnson High School product then stuck his approach shot to within an inch on the 291-yard, par-4 17th and made his birdie putt to take the lead. Needing just to halve the final hole, the senior placed his approach shot on the 462-yard, par-4 18th to within three feet. He sunk his putt for a second straight three to put a stamp on the victory.
UAB claimed the first point of the match after Nick Robillard downed Christian Fanfelle.
However, Collin Clark and Chad Sewell gave the Roadrunners a 2-1 advantage with wins in their matches.
Clark built a three-hole lead through the first six and the junior from Mansfield, Texas, held on for a 1-up victory against William Walker III.
Sewell birdied the first hole to claim a lead out of the gates that the sophomore from Conroe, Texas, would not relinquish in a 2-and-1 decision over Murray Naysmith.
The Blazers knotted the match at 2-2 when John Hayden held off Michael Rome 1-up, setting up Meehan's heroics down the final stretch.
The Roadrunners are making their second C-USA match play appearance and now have advanced to the championship match for the first time in program history, as they chase their first conference team title.
