CORPUS CHRISTI –An eight-run fifth inning propels UTSA past Texas A&M – Corpus Christi by a score of 16-4 at Chapman Field Tuesday.
The Roadrunners swept the season series with the Islanders and improved to 16-21 on the season, while Texas A&M – Corpus Christi drops to 24-15. This is the second midweek game in succession that UTSA finished of an opponent in seventh innings, earning the run-rule victory.
UTSA plated five runs in the first inning. Bryan Sturges drove in two with a single, Nick Thornquist blasted a two-run homer and Aldo Buendia added a run-scoring single. In the second Sturges plated Ryan Stacy, who tripled to right center with two outs, extending the lead to 6-0.
After two runs in both the second and the fourth innings for the home side cut the deficit to 6-4, UTSA opened the flood gates with eight runs. The Roadrunners sent 12 batters to the plate and tallied seven hits.
The margin increased to 16-4 with two runs in the seventh.
Sturges and Thornquist drove in four runs each, while Taylor Barber and Griffin Paxton tallied three RBIs. Buendia added two more.
Hunter Grimes pitched two innings of shut-out ball and earned his first collegiate win on the mound, allowing one hit and striking out three.
A.G. Yowell worked the first two innings on the mound for UTSA, allowing two runs on four hits. Shane Daughety surrendered two runs on three hits in two innings of work. Kyrell Miller allowed one hit in a scoreless seventh.
UTSA continues its road trip at UAB Thursday, Friday and Saturday. First pitch for the first two games is 6:30 p.m. and the finale is scheduled for 1 p.m.
