Early innings push ODU to series-evening win

SAN ANTONIO -- After UTSA baseball rallied with five runs in the ninth to force extra innings, Old Dominion took the lead in the top of the 10th inning and held on for a 14-13 win over the Roadrunners, on Saturday night at Roadrunner Field. 

The Monarchs and the Roadrunners traded two runs in the first inning before ODU took a commanding lead with a four-run second, adding three runs in the fifth. After the Roadrunners cut the lead to two with four in the seventh, ODU got two back in the eighth and one in the ninth.

The Roadrunners rallied with a three-run double from Dylan Rock in the bottom of the ninth inning to highlight a five-run frame that forced extra innings. ODU then took the lead in the 10th with a single tally. 

It marked the second straight game to go to extra innings to open the series as UTSA walked off with the series opener on Friday, 4-3. 

UTSA (15-20, 6-8 Conference USA) starter Slater Foust worked 4.1 innings, allowing six hits and nine runs - four earned - walking three and striking out four. Shane Daughety worked in relief of Foust, taking over in the fifth and working 2.2 innings with one run allowed. Kyrell Miller opened the eighth inning in relief of Daughety, with UTSA also using Jake Harrison, Hunter Grimes and Hunter Mason in relief. 

Old Dominion (20-14, 4-11 C-USA) starter Ryne Moore worked 2.1 innings, allowing four hits and three runs, walking three and striking out two. Morgan Maguire worked four innings in relief.

The series will conclude on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at Roadrunner Field. 

Old Dominion took the lead in the first inning with a pair of runs.

UTSA answered back on a four-pitch walk from Jonathan Tapia to open the game, scoring after Ryan Stacy ripped an RBI double into the gap. Stacy moved to third on a balk and scored on a RBI single from Bryan Sturges. 

The Monarchs plated four runs on three hits and two errors in the second inning to take a 6-2 lead.

Thornquist led off the bottom of the second with a walk and scored after Chase Keng drilled a RBI single into the left-centerfield gap. 

ODU plated three in the fifth and one in the sixth to take the lead to 10-4. 

In the seventh inning, UTSA got four runs back, with Thornquist and Taylor Barber delivering run-scoring hits. 

ODU got two runs back in the eighth, getting a bases-loaded walk and a sac fly and added on in the ninth. 

A two-run single from Bryan Arias cut the lead to 13-10 in the ninth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Rock worked the count full, fouled off five straight pitches, and then delivered a bases-clearing, three-run double down the leftfield line to even the game at 13. 

ODU took the lead with a RBI single in the ninth.
