Auburn completes sweep with nightcap win

AUBURN, Ala. -- Behind a five-run first inning, No. 17 Auburn posted an 8-3 win over UTSA baseball to complete a doubleheader and three-game sweep, on Saturday evening at Plainsman Park. 

 
UTSA (7-9) fell behind out of the gate as the Tigers plated five runs on five hits in the first inning. Auburn completed the series sweep over UTSA, posting a 6-0 win on Friday night and a 5-0 result in the opener of the twinbill on Saturday afternoon. Auburn has now won nine straight games. 
 
UTSA starter Jake Harrison (0-1) worked one inning, allowing five runs on five hits. Hunter Mason was the first out of the bullpen to open the second inning. Mason worked three shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three. Shane Daughety opened the fifth inning in relief, tossing two innings, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk. Zach Griggs worked a strong seventh with two strikeouts and Zach Zeller worked the eighth, allowing a run on four walks. 
 
Auburn (14-2) starter Carson Skipper worked 4.2 shutout innings, allowing five hits and no walks, striking out five. The Tigers also used Richard Fitts, Brooks Fuller (1-0), Peyton Glavine and Cody Greenhill in relief. 
 
UTSA saw Dylan Rock went a career-high tying 4-for-4, including a double, to extend his hitting streak to 16 games. Griffin Paxton added a pair of knocks, with Aldo Buendia, Chase Keng, Griffin Paxton and Shane Sirdashney each collecting singles. 
 
The Roadrunners will return to action on Tuesday, traveling to face Houston at 6 p.m.
 
Auburn plated five runs on five hits in the top of the first inning to take a commanding lead out of the gate. 
 
The Tigers added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. 
 
UTSA got it rolling in the top of the sixth inning, getting a single from Sirdashney to leadoff. Rock pushed him to third with a double down the leftfield line, pushing Sirdashney to third. Bryan Sturges then chopped a grounder up the middle, allowing Sirdashney to score, snapping Auburn's scoreless innings pitched streak at 33.1 straight innings. 
 
In the eighth, Rock singled to leadoff and Sturges was plunked by a pitch. Paxton then singled up the middle and the ball skidded under the glove of the centerfielder and rolled to the wall, allowing Rock and Sturges to score. 
 
Auburn plated a run in the eighth on four walks.
