Justin Anderson on Angels opening-day roster

SAN ANTONIO -- UTSA baseball great Justin Anderson has made the Los Angeles Angels opening-day, 25-man roster.

A native of Houston, Texas, Anderson made his MLB debut with a splashing rookie season in 2018. A 14th round pick in the 2014 MLB Draft by the Angels out of UTSA, Anderson became the second player in UTSA history to reach the big leagues in 2018, joining former Roadrunners backstop John Bormann. Bormann made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2018.

A 6-foot-3, 200-pound right-handed pitcher, Anderson was a two-way weapon for coach Jason Marshall and the Roadrunners from 2002-14. He pitched in 11 games with 10 starts as a freshman in 2012, and after being limited to 10 innings as a sophomore, broke out in 2014. He sported a 2.92 ERA in 17 games and 13 starts, tossing 74 innings. As a hitter, Anderson totaled seven doubles and a triple in 2012, hitting .324 with 15 RBI and five steals.

Anderson opened 2018 in double-A, and after three appearances at each double-A Mobile and triple-A Salt Lake, became a weapon for the Angels in relief. He worked in 47 games in 2019, owning a 3-3 record and a 4.07 ERA. Anderson added four saves in 55 innings, allowing only 42 hits and striking out 67.
