Spence, Brothers grab gold on final day of Roadrunner Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Danielle Spence and Orla Brothers grabbed gold medals to highlight action for the UTSA track & field teams Saturday at the Roadrunner Invitational at Park West Athletics Complex.

Spence posted the longest outdoor triple jump in UTSA and Park West history, while Brothers crossed first in the 400-meter hurdles to lead the women's team on the final day of the three-day meet.

Meanwhile, the men registered four of their seven total podium finishes Saturday, headlined by Luca Chatham's runner-up showing in the 800m.

Spence led wire-to-wire in the triple jump, as the sophomore from Jamaica skipped to a wind-legal mark of 13.36 meters (43-10) on her first of six attempts. She moved into the top spot on UTSA's all-time list, surpassing the previous record of 12.98m by Kristin Gran set all the way back in 1984, and her leap also bested the previous facility mark of 12.97m by Texas A&M's Lajarvia Brown set at the 2017 Roadrunner Invitational.

Spence's winning measurement also improved her previous outdoor personal record of 12.93m (42-5 ¼) from last season and nearly matched her overall triple jump standard of 13.37m (43-10 ½) — the program's indoor record — established in winning the Conference USA crown last month. Spence also leaped to an outdoor PR in the long jump with a fifth-place mark of 5.25m (17-2 ¾) earlier Saturday.

Brothers picked up the first outdoor win of her freshman campaign. A native of Sussex, England, she clocked a 1:00.44 to cross comfortably ahead of Kendall Rodriguez of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, who finished in 1:02.18. She nearly equaled her personal-best time of 1:00.12 posted in a third-place effort at last week's UTSA Invitational.

Meanwhile, Chatham raced to a runner-up finish in the men's 800m. The Dallas native circled the track twice in a time of 1:51.71 in the first outdoor half-mile of his senior season. He was just behind Oklahoma's Ackeen Colley, who posted the fastest time in the nation this season with a 1:49.60.

In other men's action on the track, Kaleb Campbell raced to a time of 10.61 seconds to place third in the 100m.

Vasha Sheriff also grabbed bronze with a 47.96 clocking in the 400m, while Andrew Pirog achieved a season best with a third-place time of 52.51 in the 400m hurdles.

Omar Beckdache crossed fifth in the 2,000m steeplechase with a personal-best time of 6:21.75.

In the field, Andre Douglas skipped to a mark of 15.28m (50-1 ¾) to finish fifth overall and fourth among collegiate competitors in the triple jump, while Davante Edwards cleared 2.00m (6-6 ¾) for fifth in the high jump.

The men posted seven total top-three finishes, as Jake McDaniel and Justin Wright finished 1-2 in the decathlon, which wrapped up Friday, while Vincent Perez snagged a bronze in the hammer throw.

Back on the women's side, the 4x400-meter relay team of Erin Wilson, Brothers, Sierra Andres and Darionne Gibson passed the baton to a season-best time of 3:46.10 to place third.

Gibson also raced to fifth place in the 400m, as the junior from Converse Judson High School clocked a personal best 54.91, which is just shy of UTSA's top-five performers list in the quarter.

Briana Gonzalez finished fourth in the 2,000m steeplechase by clocking a PR of 7:33.56.

The women recorded a total of five podium finishes, as Gabriyella Torres secured silver in the heptathlon and Maia Campbell grabbed third in the hammer throw on Friday.

The Roadrunners will return to action next week at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin.
