LAREDO — Chad Sewell is tied for 15th place and the UTSA men's golf team is in a tie for seventh after the first day of the Border Olympics, which got underway Monday at Laredo Country Club (par 72/7,375 yards).
Sewell fired a 3-under-par 141 and is part of a tie for 15th with 18 holes remaining. The sophomore from Conroe opened the two-day tournament with a 2-under 70 and followed that with a 71 in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, Christian Fanfelle and Michael Rome are 1-under par and in a tie for 30th at 143. Fanfelle, a freshman from San Antonio, opened with a 1-over 73 before matching Sewell with the Roadrunners' low round of the day, a 2-under 70. Rome, a sophomore from Austin, posted an even-par 72 in the morning and a 71 in the afternoon.
Collin Clark is tied for 40th after recording a pair of 72s and Sean Meehan rounds out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 90th (75-81—156).
The Roadrunners are tied with Oral Roberts for seventh place at 5-under 571 in the 16-team field. UTSA registered a 1-under 287 in the morning before carding a 4-under 284 in the second round. The Birds are one stroke in front of Little Rock and four better than UMKC, and they are just two shots behind ULM.
Competing as an individual, Will Adams is tied for 25th after turning in a 2-under 73-69—142.
No. 20 Arkansas State leads the team standings after posting a 545, followed by UTRGV (556), Houston (558), Sam Houston State (558) and 45th-ranked Campbell (560) in the top five.
Matthew Cole of Arkansas State is atop the individual leaderboard at 12-under 132 (67-65).
The final round is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday.
