Softball clinches first conference series

SAN ANTONIO – A grand slam from Bailee Baldwin and two more home runs help the Roadrunners clutch the conference series against UAB.
 
UTSA improves to 11-11 on the season and 2-0 in C-USA action, while UAB falls to 8-14 (0-2 C-USA).
 
Game 1
Celeste Loughman opened the bottom of the first with a single and Bailee Baldwin followed with a two-run homer to put the Roadrunners on the board with a 2-0 lead.
 
The Blazers had four hits in the next three innings.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, Elexus Trenkle was walked and Hailey Garza grounded out to first, advancing Trenkle. Paige Pacher was walked, while Loughman reached on a fielder's choice, loading the bases. Baldwin homered to right field, scoring four runs as the Roadrunners led 6-0. Kindell Brooks and Riley Grunberg followed with singles.
 
Victoria Villarreal garnered her first home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth increasing the lead to seven.
 
The Roadrunners scored seven runs on seven hits, while the Blazers posted nine hits.
 
Madison Nelson captured her sixth win of the season.
 
Game 2
Through one and a half innings, UAB had two hits, while UTSA had a 1-2-3 inning.
 
In the bottom of the second, Kaitlin Lopez doubles to left center and Victoria Villarreal followed with a double down the first base line, scoring Lopez. Elexus Trenkle was walked, while Paige Pacher hit a single to second, advancing runners. With two outs on the board, Bailee Baldwin hit a triple down the first base line, scoring Villarreal, Trenkle and Pacher. Freshman Kindell Brooks scored Baldwin off a single to right field. The Roadrunners led 5-0 after the second.
 
Villarreal hit a single to right center in the bottom of the third. Trenkle followed with a single up the middle. Hailey Garza hit a ground out to first base to advance runners to scoring position. Paige Pacher posted her second single of the game as Villarreal scored. Loughman scored Trenkle of a single as UTSa led 7-0.
 
UAB opened the fourth inning with a home run from Natalie Erwin. Sierra Frazier singled to left field and Ashton Clem reached on a fielder's choice as Frazier was thrown out at second. Rachel Owens hit a double to right center, scoring two more runs for the Blazers. Destini England singled up the middle as Owens was tagged out at home. UTSA led 7-3 at the end of the fourth.
 
The Blazers added two more runs in the sixth as Clem single up the middle and Dylinn Stancil was walked. Sarah Crawford reached on a fielder's choice as runners advanced. Stancil and Clem reached home off a single and a fielding error. The Roadrunners led 7-5.
 
UTSA left two on in the sixth and UAB had one more hit in the seventh, but left one on.
 
The Roadrunners posted 7 runs on 10 hits and had three errors, while the Blazers scored five runs on 12 hits with one error.
 
Clarissa Hernandez picked up her fourth win of the season and Madison Nelson garnered her first save.
 
Game three of the series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
